Revell Ferrari F10 – WIP

After sanding down the body, I gave it another two coats of the Tamiya Ferrari red – unfortunately with mixed results once again!  I’m still having problems avoiding the dreaded orange -peel finish!   So, I’ll give it another sanding and then apply a couple of coats of clear as I’m not getting the finish I want from the paint – (more likely my fault than the paint as I’m way out of practice doing this) – so more later and hopefully I’ll solve the paint problem. Revell Ferrari F10 – Tropicana finish!

I used Humbrol Ferrari red from the canister to apply about four light coats, but unfortunately the finish is something the people at Tropicana would be proud of – ORANGE PEEL texture!!   I wasn’t really surprised, as it’s always difficult to avoid this result when using  aerosols.  So I’m busy using a sanding stick to bring it back down to something a little more smooth before I give it a couple of coats of Johnsons clear.   I also used a can of aerosol to spray a chrome effect on the wheels – not a bad finish for €7.00!  It … Continue reading Revell Ferrari F10 – Tropicana finish!

Wonderful Motorsport photo’s by Gerald Swan

I was researching the Brabham BT26 as I’m just about to start building a 43rd scale model of one, and I came across the most wonderful collection of photographs by a gentleman by the name of Gerald Swan.  All wonderful images from the Golden era of British motorsport (1969 – 74) – wonderfully archived by event and location – including evocative races like “Race of Champions” and the “Guards Throphy” – all great stuff when it comes to researching any number of cars from that era – many thanks Gerald. As a follow-on to my last post, I thought I … Continue reading Wonderful Motorsport photo’s by Gerald Swan

Brabham BT26 – 1/43rd SMTS metal kit

Another recent acquisition for me is this metal kit from SMTS of one of the nicest cars ever to carry the Brabham name – the BT26 from the golden era of the sixties – (1968/69) driven by “Black- Jack” himself and partnered by Jacky Ickx who drove this to victory in both the Canadian and German GP’s  during the ’69 season and second to Jackie Stewart in the championship.  Like the Revell Ferrari I’m building, this is my first 43rd scale model build in a very long time, however, spurred on by the buzz that I’m getting from the F10 … Continue reading Brabham BT26 – 1/43rd SMTS metal kit

Revell Ferrari F10 X 2! – more progress and more work!

The “more progress” I refer to is that, I’ve applied the undercoat/primer, however, on the other hand, the “more work” refers to the fact that I purchased another Revell F10 kit!!!  – I just can’t believe what I did – I’m still in shock – it’s at least 20 years since I built a plastic formula 1 kit and then, in the space of a month, I’ve started two!   Since I started the first one I’ve really been bitten by the bug in more ways than one – I absolutely love the lines of the F10 – (it’s a clear … Continue reading Revell Ferrari F10 X 2! – more progress and more work!

Alain Prost 1/20 miniature driver figure

I’m still popping back to my line-up of miniature driver figures from time to time and yesterday, I spent a while painting the flesh tones on this Alain Prost figure.  It’s based on an old Modellers figure which I have modified slightly (see earlier posts) – I’m reasonably happy with it so far so next time, I’ll paint the stitching and shading on the clothing followed with the helmet and the application of decals etc – more on this one soon. Revell Ferrari F10 – work in progress

Here’s a quick overview of my approach and experiences of the assembly process so far: Engine fully asembled – (very straightforward). Assemble both exhaust stacks but don’t attach them to the engine yet – check later that outlets line up with openings in bodywork. Attach engine and lower part of gearbox to chassis floor  – (also straightforward). Assemble and attach top of airbox/rollover bar to top of body Having assembled both radiator pods and attached them to the body, I think I should have left them off  for painting – but we will see later! I also cut the top … Continue reading Revell Ferrari F10 – work in progress

Ayrton Senna Senninha 1/20 scale driver figure

Still sticking with my miniature driver figures, I spent the afternoon refining the painting on this 1/20 figure of Ayrton Senna.  The figure is by CRAFT10 – a resin casting with brilliant crisp surface detail sporting a good facial likeness and a nice relaxed pose.    I’ve depicted him in wearing his Rothmans overalls from the tragic ’94 season at Williams, and rather than the Senna “S” logo on the T shirt, I decided to paint on the logo of his childrens charity, the “Senninha” foundation – which thankfully is still going strong with the guidance of his sister.   As I’m … Continue reading Ayrton Senna Senninha 1/20 scale driver figure

Revell Ferrari F10 – Alonso – Monaco 2010

The first plastic F1 kit I’ve bought for many years arrived today (beautifully packed) from Netmerchants in Belfast. Box art is pretty good: Parts come molded on red / grey and surface detailing is quite  good. The kit is 1/24 scale and it can be assembled to represent 4 different versions as raced by both Alonso and Massa in the following races during 2010: Version 1 Baharain, Version 2/3 Spain & Germany, Version 4 ferraris 800th GP in Turkey. Decals The kit is worth buying jut for the decals alone, they are stunningly printed and are very comprehensive indeed. I’ll … Continue reading Revell Ferrari F10 – Alonso – Monaco 2010
