Armco paintjob….with Hairspray!

I’m trying out this “Hairspray” technique which the armour modellers use to get the faded and chipping paint effect.  I applied some initial ramdom “underneath” colors and then gave it a blast of hairspray followed by another thicker coat of top colors.  The idea being that when water is now applied to the top coat it reacts with the hairspray underneath and by rubbing the top coat with a toothpick it will loosen the top coat and expose the colors underneath – it sounds all too easy, so we shall see !   Pictures below show the first coat with the … Continue reading Armco paintjob….with Hairspray!

Another 1/20 Schumacher driver figure!

Some shots of the final product – once again a GF-models fgure sporting the 2007-ish ferrari garbe – Schuberth helmet, Hans device Puma suit – branding is a mixture of Marlboro and Barcode (which I referred to in an earlier post) – To get the best from the figure I made some additions / amendments in the area of boots, gloves and drink tube / comms wiring in the helmet.  The hinges for the helmet visor are domestic pins and 3d paint was used to represent the small lifting handles in the centre of the tear-offs (which are thin strips … Continue reading Another 1/20 Schumacher driver figure!

Another Gilles Villeneuve helmet!

I’m making a habit of re-doing visors – it’s not that I like doing them but the first one I did for this version of the figure went missing!  This is the ‘GF figure of Gilles again as per his ’82 attire but this time I’ve included the visor for his GPA helmet. – As I didn’t have a decal for the “GPA” lettering at the time of construction, I painted it in, however, since then I bought the Modellers figure which comes with a really good set of decals – including the “GPA” decal for the helmet but there’s … Continue reading Another Gilles Villeneuve helmet!

Gilles Villeneuve – Bell helmet – completed

I picked up some really good decals from Modellers for their Villeneuve figures and I nicked a pair of SMEG decals for the helmet – the decals I have on the Bell helmet in these shots are more than likely not the branding he would have sported while wearing this very early driving suit – they would be more appropriate for his red driving suit which will be the subject of another figure I’m converting at the moment. The “NO PARKING” incident – Monaco 2006

At last I’ve united “Schumi” with his completed Schuberth helmet and gloves.  I’ve posed him with a piece of armco (which I still have yet to properly paint) to take a few shots.   He’s depicted in the “Rainbow” colored driving suit he wore during the Monaco Grand Prix of 2006.  That was the time when he “parked” at the Rascasse corner during qualifying and thereby robbing Alonso (who was following behind on a “hot” lap) of a quicker time – seen here on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jcHrHUJdu0&NR=1&feature=fvwp Continue reading The “NO PARKING” incident – Monaco 2006

Schumachers Schuberth lid

Continuing on with the GF driver figure, I want to include some extra detail in the helmet/visor.  On the helmet itself, I’ll include a drink tube extending from the helmet and the visor will look a lot better if I include the lifting handle at the front together with the small lift handles on either side and the tear-off visor ends.  I’ll also attach two small inflator tubes to the shoulder pads for the Hans device.  Firstly, the drink tube is made from a length of plastic taken from a department store price tag – (the type which attaches to … Continue reading Schumachers Schuberth lid

Gilles Villeneuve – another take – WIP

This is another of the great 1/20 scale resin driver figures from GF-models.  This time I’ve depicted him wearing the helmet and white suit worn in the latter stages of his F1 career – some sources show this as the outfit he wore from the ’82 season (his last) and other references I’ve seen show him wearing it prior to that.  Once again, I had a go at using the old Tamiya decals from a couple of the Pit/Driver sets I have from over 20 years ago and (with the exception of the blue lines for the helmet) I was … Continue reading Gilles Villeneuve – another take – WIP

Keep it on the “black stuff” – with the help of Armco!

A while back, I posted pictures of how I modified the Armco barrier which comes with the Tamiya pit set.  I gave it a coat of primer, so now all I have to do is paint it up (Red&White I think?) with some appropriate weathering and it should make a nice “prop” for photographing the 1/20 driver figures. I placed it on a suitable base to take some test shots and see how it looked with figures of the same scale, and I think it looks the part.
