Senna Imola ’94 – WIP

I’m still trying to decide on a satisfactory composition for the various elements of this little diorama.  I want to give prominence to the Senna figure and try to convey a sombre mood as he takes a few private moments planning his own tribute to the tragic passing of a fellow driver – Roland Ratzenberger.   So I’ve concentrated my painting efforts up to now on the figure and the flag.  Continue reading “Senna Imola ’94 – WIP”

Ayrton Senna driver figure – Imola ’94

I’ve finished all the “Miliputting” now! – his head has now been properly attached, I gave him a pair of thumbs and added more detail to the suit and hat and generally refined the pose – so he looks pretty good now.  I’ve just undercoated him with a couple of primer coats, so while that dries I’ll get to work on adding detail to the flight-case (table) on which his helmet, gloves and (Rolands) flag are resting – I’ll also probably add a water bottle (which I’m carving from clear sprue) to include a balancing vertical.  All the levels and … Continue reading Ayrton Senna driver figure – Imola ’94

Ayrton Senna – Imola 1994

“Senna the Movie” has generated an unprecedented amount of discussion and interest into Ayrton Sennas life and indeed, his untimely and tragic death.  And while the movie has unleashed many new insights into different aspects of his racing career, it has also raised many more questions.  Ever since Senna burst onto the F1 scene back in the early ’80’s, I have always been a fan and I often found myself watching somewhat boring races just to see him perform.  I always felt once he was on track his mere presence held promise of something “different” happening, even when the race … Continue reading Ayrton Senna – Imola 1994

Senna and Prost

I originally painted both these figures (made by Modellers) a couple of months back.  I was going to take some more photo’s of them today and the colors looked to me to be a bit “flat” so I did a bit of touch up and re-glazed both red suits with a red orange to lift them slightly. I also painted a small logo on the chest of Prosts T shirt.  It occupied me for an hour or so and gave me a chance to do a bit of color mixing. Continue reading Senna and Prost

Senna – the movie

I was fortunate to get an invitation to a preview screening of  “SENNA the movie” last night at the IFI in Dublin.  Apart from being put off by media “hype” prior to the release of this film, I’m generally a bit sceptical of documentaries which have a tendency to rehash old facts and images in order to produce something labelled as “new and revealing”; only to find it has been done to promote (and sell) the movie along with a controversial and unfounded “new spin” on the story.  In the case of “SENNA the movie”, this was absolutely not the … Continue reading Senna – the movie

Ayrton Senna Senninha 1/20 scale driver figure

Still sticking with my miniature driver figures, I spent the afternoon refining the painting on this 1/20 figure of Ayrton Senna.  The figure is by CRAFT10 – a resin casting with brilliant crisp surface detail sporting a good facial likeness and a nice relaxed pose.    I’ve depicted him in wearing his Rothmans overalls from the tragic ’94 season at Williams, and rather than the Senna “S” logo on the T shirt, I decided to paint on the logo of his childrens charity, the “Senninha” foundation – which thankfully is still going strong with the guidance of his sister.   As I’m … Continue reading Ayrton Senna Senninha 1/20 scale driver figure

Ayrton Senna – Watercolor

I just finished this watercolor study of Ayrton Senna – there are just so many things about him (on and off the track) that make him such an interesting subject.   I always enjoy painting images of him – it’s such a pleasure that I never tire of it – there are very strong parallells between him and that other legendary driver Gilles Villeneuve, and it’s quite incredible that both of them still exude a sort of magnetism for motor racing fans all over the world – even in death! Ayrton Senna 1/20 scale figure – WIP

Still working on my WIP line-up.  This one is of Ayrton Senna (an old Modellers figure) 1/20 in resin.  I decided to depict him wearing his own logo on what was going to be a very plain white t shirt.  Using acrylics, I’ve blocked in the main colours and have  added the stitching detail on the suit.  I’ll add some Marlboro logos and the like to inject more interest and in particular, I’ll add a large Marlboro panel to the back of the suit…… and the work continues – more later.
